DURHAM – Duke’s DeWayne Carter was selected a finalist for the 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year, the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine announced.
The team captain and Third Team All-ACC selection, started all 12 games last season on the gridiron, registering 37 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three pass breakups and six quarterback pressures. His caused fumbles ranked first in the ACC and tied for 11th in the nation. The Pickerington, Ohio, native earned three-plus tackles in eight contests, including a career-high six against Virginia Tech in 2021.
The redshirt junior is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in education. In addition, Carter was named a 2021 Academic All-ACC and CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient.
Off the field, Carter serves as an active member of Duke’s United Black Athletes and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organizations while representing Duke on the Division I NCAA Football Oversight Committee Student-Athlete Connection Group (FOC SACG). Expanding his service into the Durham community, Carter has worked with Habitat for Humanity building houses for the local community, spent time as a tutor for KIPP Durham College Preparatory School and Durham Public School Ignite, taken time to read to children at Southwest and Glenn Elementary, and served as a youth league baseball coach for First Calvary Baptist Church.

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor students of color who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
As the name denotes, the annual Ashe edition is a part of the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine’s quarter-century legacy of recognizing outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits. In addition to their athletic ability, students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
